Calm, thorough, kind. Vet care for every animal.

A neighbourhood clinic on North Lombard Street for dogs, cats, rabbits, birds and reptiles. Open six days, with same-day sick visits.

Come in. Here’s how a visit goes.

  1. Step 1

    Check in from the car

Text us when you park. We call you in when your room is ready, so nobody waits nose to nose.

  2. Step 2

    Thirty minutes, on the floor

Every exam is booked for half an hour. We start on the floor with treats and only use the table if your animal is happy there.

  3. Step 3

A plan and a price first

Before any test or treatment you get a written plan with the price. Nothing extra happens without your yes.

  4. Step 4

    A text the next morning

Your vet checks in the day after and answers questions by text for a week, at no charge.

A Siamese cat with blue eyes sitting upright on a green sofa
Cat side, left door

Two doors. Cats never wait with dogs.

We split the building down the middle in 2018. Each side has its own entrance, its own waiting room and its own exam rooms, so a nervous cat never hears a bark and a big dog has room to pace.

Cat side
Warm and quiet, with shelves that lift carriers off the floor.
Dog side
A scale built into the floor, water bowls and space to sniff.
The warm corner
Rabbits, birds and reptiles wait in a heated room on the cat side.

Dog side, right door

Small, scaly, feathered or furry.

Four of our vets see dogs and cats every day. One of them has spent twenty years with rabbits, birds and reptiles, and keeps a heated room for them.

  • A smiling corgi sitting in front of plush toys

    Dogs and puppies

From first shots at eight weeks to the slow, careful years.

  • A long-haired grey cat with blue eyes being stroked

    Cats and kittens

Handled on their own side, in towels, at their own speed.

  • A person holding a fluffy white rabbit against a patterned dress

    Rabbits and small mammals

Rabbits, guinea pigs, rats and ferrets, teeth and tummies first.

  • A hand holding a bearded dragon

    Birds and reptiles

Parrots, lizards, snakes and tortoises, in a room kept at 82°F.

What we do here.

Everything a family animal needs under one roof, and a referral letter written the same day when it needs more.

  1. Two vets in navy scrubs holding a small white dog in an exam room

    Check-ups

A nose-to-tail exam once a year, twice once they are older. Weight, teeth, heart and joints go into one written record, so you can see the trend.

    30 minutes, any weekday

  2. A vet in a face mask sitting beside a corgi on the exam table

    Vaccines and microchips

Only the vaccines your animal's life calls for. An indoor cat and a dog who swims in the Willamette do not get the same list.

    Given during a check-up

  3. A white cat yawning with its mouth wide open, teeth showing

    Teeth

Cleaning and X-rays under anaesthesia, extractions when a tooth is past saving, and a photo of every tooth we took out.

    Home by the afternoon

  4. A sleeping cat lying on surgical paper before an operation

    Surgery

Spays, neuters, lumps and stitches, with a nurse who watches nothing but the anaesthetic. We call you when they wake up.

    Tuesdays and Thursdays

  5. A white French bulldog in a polka-dot shirt sitting on a steel exam table

    Same-day sick visits

Four slots every day stay empty until morning. Call before ten and a vet sees your animal that day.

    Call before 10 am

  6. An old grey-muzzled dog lying on the floor beside a chair

    The older years

Pain plans for stiff joints, kidney checks, and when the time comes, a quiet goodbye at home or in our garden room.

    Home visits on request

Who you’ll meet in the room.

Three vets and a head nurse, all of whom still kneel on the floor for an exam.

  • Portrait of Dr. Martin Hale, grey-haired, in a white coat, smiling

    Dr. Martin Hale

    Founder, general practice and surgery

Opened Burrow after twelve years in an emergency hospital. Still runs the Tuesday surgery list.

  • Portrait of Dr. Priya Raman in navy scrubs and glasses, smiling

    Dr. Priya Raman

    Co-founder, cats and teeth

Ran the feline clinic at a teaching hospital, then built our cat side room by room.

  • Portrait of Dr. Leo Marchetti, curly-haired, in dark scrubs, smiling

    Dr. Leo Marchetti

    Rabbits, birds and reptiles

Twenty years with the animals most clinics turn away. Keeps the warm room at 82°F.

  • Portrait of Rosa Delgado laughing, in teal scrubs and a patterned surgical cap

    Rosa Delgado, LVT

    Head nurse and anaesthesia

Watches the monitor through every operation and makes the next-morning calls herself.

This month at Burrow.

Seven of the animals who came through our doors in September, shared with their people's permission.

  • A small white dog wearing a clear recovery cone and a red harness

    PipMaltese, 3

Spayed on Tuesday, eating on Wednesday. The cone comes off on the 14th.

  • A tabby cat peeking out of a pile of green blankets

    FernTabby, 11

Two teeth out and a clean bill for the rest. Chews on the left side again.

  • A brown and white lop-eared rabbit on a black background

    MochiLop rabbit, 2

A slow gut caught early. Hay, fluids and one night in the warm room.

  • A fluffy brown puppy wearing a soft blue cone on a patterned rug

    BiscuitPoodle cross, 5 months

Swallowed a sock. Out without surgery and home by dinner.

  • A white kitten with blue eyes peeking out from a plaid blanket

    SnowKitten, 10 weeks

First vaccines and a microchip. Slept through both.

  • A green-cheeked conure perched on a cage door

    KiwiConure, 6

Beak trimmed and a new diet, which she is loudly against.

  • An older German shepherd with a greying face, mouth open, outdoors

    AtlasGerman shepherd, 13

A monthly joint injection and a ramp for the car. Back on his walks.

A small white two-storey corner building with a teal door and shop window

On Lombard Street since 2014.

2014

One room behind a café door

Martin and Priya rented the little fish café on the corner: one exam room, a borrowed X-ray machine and a sign we never took down.

2018

Upstairs, and down the middle

We took the flat above for surgery and recovery, and split the ground floor into a cat side and a dog side with a door each.

2023

The whole corner, and a warm room

Leo joined with his rabbits, birds and reptiles, the back room became the warm room, and the corner became Burrow.

Before you come in.

Anything else, call 503 000 0000 or write to hello@burrow.example.

Do you see emergencies?

We see sick animals the same day if you call before 10 am. At night and on Sundays we send you to the city's 24-hour emergency hospital and phone ahead with your animal's history.

Can I stay in the room?

For every exam, yes. Most animals are calmer with you there. For X-rays and surgery we take them through, and bring them back as soon as they are awake.

Do you take pet insurance?

We work with every insurer. You pay us on the day and we fill in the claim form before you leave.

What should I bring the first time?

Old records if you have them, the name of the food and any medicines, and something that smells of home: a towel, a toy, a sock.

My cat hates the carrier.

Leave it open in the living room for a week with a towel inside, and cover it on the drive. Our cat-side nurses lift the lid off rather than pulling anyone out.

Can I pay over time?

For bills over $500 you can pay in three monthly parts with no interest. Ask at the desk or mention it when you get your estimate.

Come in.

Ask for a visit below, call, or text us from the car park. New patients are welcome on both sides of the building.
