The kettle's loud. The beer's louder.
We brew seven barrels at a time in an old tram shed, in a kettle that bangs like a drum kit and we pour it forty feet from the tank
. Grab a stool and act like you found us first.
Loud Kettle Brewing Co. · Strip District, Pittsburgh · since 2019
Four things that never go in the kettle
-
No syrup shortcuts
Grain gets milled here at six in the morning and mashed by hand. The spent grain goes to a pig farm up the Allegheny, and the pigs have opinions.
-
No rushed lagers
Our lagers sit near freezing for six weeks. A bigger brewery would call that wasted tank space. We call it the reason they taste this clean.
-
No stale hops
Hops arrive vacuum-sealed and get used inside the month. Anything older goes home with the staff, who are not complaining.
-
No filtered-to-death
We filter enough to be bright, never enough to be boring. If it tastes like a press release, it doesn't leave the tank.

From grain to glass
-
Mill and mash
Four hundred pounds of grain cracked at 6 am and stirred into hot water by someone holding a paddle and a coffee.
-
The loud boil
Ninety minutes at a rolling boil. The kettle rattles its lid, hops go in three times, and the street smells like toast and pine.
-
Slow ferment
Yeast does the real work for two weeks in steel tanks named after retired tram drivers. We check the temperature and say thanks.
-
Cold rest
Everything rests cold until it's bright and calm. Lagers get six weeks of it; the hazy stuff gets three days and a pep talk.
-
Tank to tap
Bright tanks feed the taps through forty feet of chilled line. Nothing is bottled, trucked or warmed up before it hits your glass.
The tram shed
Forty feet of bar, sixteen taps and long tables built from the depot's old floorboards. Bring friends, bring the dog, bring an appetite for whatever truck parked outside tonight.
-
Open seven days
From 3 pm on weekdays and noon at weekends. Last call is called loudly, so nobody misses it.
-
Dogs welcome
Water bowls at the door, biscuits behind the bar. Cats are also welcome, but they never come.
-
Food truck nightly
Tacos Tuesday to Thursday, smash burgers Friday to Sunday. You can also bring your own.
Overheard
Things said at the bar, written down by the bartenders, printed here with permission and a free pint.
Dana, Thursdays
“I came in for one Static Haze. That was in March.”
Marcus, table six
“The stout tastes like the best breakfast I've never had. Is it too early? It's 4 pm. Fine.”
Priya, first visit
“My dog got a biscuit before I got a menu, and honestly that's the right order.”
Joe, retired tram driver
“I drove the 47 out of this shed for thirty years. It never smelled this good.”
Lena, quiz champion
“We lost the bridges round and won the night. Peach Feedback is a performance enhancer.”
Sam, bartender
“Yes, the kettle is always that loud. No, we can't turn it down. Yes, I've asked.”
Ask the bar
Can I bring my dog?
Yes, inside and on the patio, as long as they're leashed and friendly. Water bowls are by the door and the biscuits live behind the bar.
Are kids allowed?
Until 8 pm, with a grown-up. We keep house root beer on tap and crayons at the host stand.
Do you serve food?
A food truck parks outside every night we're open. You're also welcome to bring your own food or have it delivered to the bar.
Can I take beer home?
Everything on the board goes into 32 oz crowlers, sealed at the bar. Bring a clean growler and we'll fill that too.
Anything gluten-free?
Our beers aren't, but we always pour a gluten-reduced pale and two dry ciders from an orchard friend in Butler County.
Can I book the whole place?
The back room seats forty and the whole shed a hundred and sixty. Send the form at the bottom of the page and we'll call you within a day.
